In the world, children are sometimes seen as a burden or an unwanted “thing” in life, but we know that God says children are a gift:
“Behold, children are a gift from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward.”
Psalm 127:3
God’s word is very clear and true to how we should view our children, and how we should view having children. In Genesis 1:18, God said, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth”.
Why then should we fear having children?
Or having a multitude of children?
For myself, I often fear what others think of me. I often care about what others have to say. Currently, I am the mother of a six month old girl and am expecting two more little ones in December. Yes, I am having twins. Isn’t that crazy? Three children all born within 11 months of each other! At first, I was really nervous and honestly thought, this isn’t really what I wanted, but in the first trimester God grew my heart for these two children in my womb. Who am I to tell God no? Who am I to tell God that His gift isn’t really a gift? God has greatly blessed me with these children and what a great joy it is to be entrusted by God to teach and raise them to know and serve Him!
There is also the fear of the financial burden of children, but one thing we have to constantly remind ourselves is that God does not give a gift without providing for that gift. He is a faithful God who will provide all of our needs. It may not be what we think we need or want, but it will be what God knows we need. Indeed, there may be a real financial need when having children, but we should trust that God loves His children (you and those babies!) more than the flowers of the field which He provides for. How much more will He provide for us (Matthew 6:26-30)?
As Christians, we must cling to the Word. We must find our truth, hope, and confidence from what Scripture tells us. If God says that children are a blessing and a gift, then they are. No ands, ifs, or buts about it. God is not a liar and cannot be a liar (Hebrews 6:18). The fruit of the womb is a reward (Psalm 127:3b). God is rewarding us with children to raise to bring glory to God. What is the chief end of man? To glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. What a great way to bring glory to God by having children and raising them up in the knowledge and service of God!
Let us not fear having a multitude of children. They are a precious GIFT from the LORD. Have I mentioned that enough times! A gift that we should rejoice in as individuals and within the church body. It does not matter if it is your first or your fifteenth child, there should be rejoicing in what God is doing! All praise be to God and glory to Him forever! Amen!
Love,
Halie
