To Kill a Mockingbird, a “one-hit wonder” published in 1960, has been my favorite book for awhile now. I’m not alone in my fondness for this significant work about racial injustice in the south. For all of us TKAM fans, the news of a recently discovered manuscript by author Harper Lee was exciting and long overdue. Scout, Jem, Boo Radley and Atticus Finch will hopefully all return as big as life in this next novel. This is quite thrilling for book lovers galore.
As I was contemplating this terrific news, I thought about how intriguing it was that an author, who had only one published work, actually had another text hidden away among a mess of papers somewhere in her home. Surprising. Mysterious. Unforeseen. This makes for an instant bestseller, that’s for sure, in the world of fiction.
While all these things are true, I realized how grateful I am that the actual word of God, the Bible, is complete. Many wise men over many years examined the scriptures and sought the Holy Spirit’s leading as the canon of scripture was compiled. We can rest assured that the words we read for guidance, comfort and conviction have been delivered by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and are absolute Truth. This foundation is steady and stable; it will not be changing, other truths won’t be discovered that null and void or add to God’s written word. The Bible is 100% true for all people in all places across all times. This is secure bedrock upon which we can stake our faith. Praise God!
I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Revelation 22: 18-19
