To be honest, we don’t often listen to music while we are at home, or even in the car (though that is partly due to the fact that the radio is broken, and we have yet to get it fixed). I have never been a huge fan of music, and I prefer silence in the car, but only when I’m alone, as that is pretty impossible when I have four children riding with me. My husband, on the other hand, loves listening to music—classical, jazz, rock n’ roll blue grass (a.k.a. The Avett Brothers), Christian bands, and so much more. He often encourages me to play more music for the kids during the day, but I have yet to really put it into practice. I mostly have the kids listen to their Awana verses via Amazon Music, to help them with their memorization.

Even as I am writing this, my three year old son has requested that we listen to “church music”! I am so encouraged by his request, and of course, how could I say no? Music is mentioned all over the Word, especially in regards to praising the Lord. 1 Chronicles 16:9 encourages us to sing, “Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderous works!” Psalm 101:1 says “I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will make music.”

I really do think that music is important, but I struggle with incorporating it into my home. Among other things, music can be used in our homes to calm the chaos, teach spiritual truths, to develop language skills and educate, to bless others, and even learning an instrument to serve and glorify God. Psalm 98:4 says “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!” and Psalm 66:4 says “All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.” We sing at church in worship to our great God, and we need music in our homes to do the same. What better way to worship God at home than by singing His praises?

Love,
Emily
