My God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing my God cannot do…

Do you know this song? Are you humming along with these words? I think I first learned this chorus when my twenty-somethings were toddlers. While simple, it has endured. Perhaps its longevity is because of the foundational truth it speaks. But, its simple truth can often times get overlooked as we sing its familiar lyrics with our little ones. For me, this happens with many familiar songs from church. Case in point: “Trust and obey/for there’s no other way/to be happy in Jesus/than to trust and obey”.

When one of our pastors recently encouraged our church family through his sermon to have a ‘big view of God’, I was challenged by my own limited perspective. Since I have been chewing on the question How big is your God? I thought you might want to chew along with me…

How BIG is your God?

When you are in a no-end job…how BIG is your God?

When your hurt is too deep to bear…how BIG is your God?

When another’s sin is too grievous to forgive…how BIG is your God?

When the loss takes your breath away…how BIG is your God?

When no solution is in sight…how BIG is your God?

When your spouse has betrayed you…how BIG is your God?

When you are exhausted from caring for an elderly parent…how BIG is your God?

When the diagnosis is cancer…how BIG is your God?

When fears threaten your faith…how BIG is your God?

When infertility is your reality…how BIG is your God?

God is THIS big

Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. Psalm 147:5

There is none like You, O LORD (You are great, and Your name is great in might). Jeremiah 10:6

For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised; He is also to be feared above all gods. 1 Chronicles 16:25

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior…for He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. Luke 1:46-47, 49

Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You. Jeremiah 32:17

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3: 20-21

Our minds cannot even fathom how gloriously big our God is; our language cannot even describe it, for His thoughts are not our thoughts nor His ways our ways. They are far higher! And so, when we think all hope is lost, or no victory is certain, never fear–our God is so big, so strong, and so mighty, there is NOTHING our God cannot do.

The loss, the hurt against us, the frustration or impossibility of a situation-these things have happened in our lives because our sovereign God has ordained them, and determined them for our good. May we now trust and obey because there really is no other way we can be happy, we can have peace, and we can be unified with others unless we seek God’s word to know Him. And His word reminds us that He is BIG.

Love, Wendy
