Who is God? To Moses, He introduced Himself simply as I AM.
And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’ Exodus 13:14-15
“I AM” encompassed all of the credentials God gave to Moses. He went on in verse 15 to expound that He was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that His name is forever, and that it’s a memorial to all generations.
It is hard for my mind to grasp that God is the same today as He always has been, that he is Who He has always been. I know He is; Scripture says He’s the same yesterday, today and forever. But do we ever let that thought really percolate in our minds?
I mean, our world of 2020 looks vastly different from the world that Moses lived in. I can’t imagine living in Moses’ day. I like the convenience of technology and grocery stores (although lately even those loves are being challenged). But God has been a steady sovereign presence all throughout time.
We can find comfort in the “I AM.” It really embraces everything God is and everything He is to us in time of need. Feeling weak? I AM the Lord your God. Discouraged? I AM the Lord your God. Struggling to fight sin? I AM the Lord your God. Can’t forgive yourself? I AM the Lord your God. Failing? I AM the Lord your God. Lonely? I AM the Lord your God. Frustrated? I AM the Lord your God. Joyful? I AM the Lord your God. Grateful, blessed? I AM the Lord your God.
Let Him be our I AM today. Let Him be all sufficient. We all need more of Him.
