What comes to mind when I speak of God’s word?
Some might respond, “Love!” or “Truth!” Others might respond, “Ooh, I really should read it more or know it better.” Still others may reject it or disbelieve it altogether.
With the recent passing of Communist dictator Fidel Castro, stories have been circulating of Christians who survived Castro’s violence. One quote hit me especially hard:
“Just as there is a very short distance between the U.S. and Cuba, there is a very short distance between a democracy and a dictatorship where the government gets to decide what to do, how to think, and how to live.”
Our recent election in the U.S. resulted in many conservatives breathing a sigh of relief. But, I can’t help being concerned about our nation, especially the Christians in our nation, falling back into a stupor, thinking everything is gonna be just fine. This is foolish on so many levels. We must realize there is a great chasm in our nation and the only uniter is Jesus Christ. To reject Him is to reject the Word; to reject the Bible is to reject Jesus.
And this is exactly what more and more people are doing–some purposefully, others are being led blindly. When entire cities refuse to submit to the government and persist in their anti-biblical ways, they are rejecting Jesus. When young people are more concerned about the bullying of their neighbors or themselves rather than speaking truth to these very people about their sins, they are rejecting Jesus.
“To love Jesus means to obey Him.”
Whether it’s in a classroom or political hallways or even some churches, it appears that there is much more Jesus-rejecting going on in the U.S. than Jesus-loving.
The psalmist wrote in Psalm 119 great heartfelt words about God and His commands. There was no guilt about knowing it better; there was great joy in knowing and obeying it. There were no excuses that God didn’t really mean what He said; there was humility and a tenderness to follow Him at His word.
Only God knows the future of our nation, but I don’t want to be caught sleeping. We have opportunity after opportunity to be bold and full of His truth now. May we read God’s word, store it in our hearts, and speak it freely so He may be glorified and people may repent from sin!
“How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to Your word.
I seek You with all my heart;
do not let me stray from Your commands.
I have hidden Your word in my heart
that I might not sin against You.
Praise be to You, Lord;
teach me Your decrees.
With my lips I recount
all the laws that come from Your mouth.
I rejoice in following Your statutes
as one rejoices in great riches.
I meditate on Your precepts
and consider Your ways.
I delight in Your decrees;
I will not neglect Your word.”
