Where were you on April 8, 2024? If anywhere near the line of totality, you were likely outside viewing a total eclipse. I was able to view it with my two eyes along with the help of two powerful telescopes some kind people had brought to where we were. It was nothing short of amazing to feel twilight come on in the heat of the day and to feel a sudden coolness in the air as the moon passed in front of the sun. The sun flares and the ring of fire were incredible!

Did you know that the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, but that the moon is also 400 times closer to earth? This allows for the moon–though remarkably smaller– to almost fully eclipse the sun. When looking up stats about the eclipse, one math website called this phenomenon “a bit of lucky math”. Hmm…a bit of lucky math? So it’s lucky math which orchestrates the universe and skies to align so predictably that modern knowledge can predict the time and place of not only this eclipse, but ones far into the future as well. There’s no lucky math involved at all. Instead, I believe it is the wonderful design of a Creator.

My daughter is in biology this year. She has an excellent teacher who requires a good deal from the students. They have spent the year going over intricate DNA patterns, cell formation, mitosis, meiosis, etc. I have even brushed up on bio myself as I’ve tried to study with her this year. So much order and design is wrapped up in life and the human body: from complex systems to miniscule functions. Life is a miracle.  Yet in her public school, one of the last required units of the year has been about evolution. No Designer or Creator is mentioned. Instead they go to great lengths to call it scientific happenstance where one theoretical example after another, order came from chaos. Go figure! More lucky math.

I want to share one more example of how the culture omits God from its “religion”. If you follow health podcasts at all, you will quickly hear a common theme in eating: carnivore and paleo diets and primal behaviors from our caveman ancestors which drive the human condition.  These diet trends build plates around animal protein and suggest we ought to anchor our eating the same way our ancestors did. You will hear further talk of how the human body has adapted and evolved from primitives, but that our instincts are still there to hunt and gather and eat meat. One that I listened to recently even gave a framework for gender roles (men hunt and gather; women nurture and build community). Given any other circumstance where gender roles are tied to scripture and God’s design, such words would have been cause for outrage. But because there was no reference to God’s creation, it was completely acceptable.

I am no apologist, but I can see with my two eyes the wonder of the world around, and how it speaks to design and a Creator.  That Creator is God. His creation brings him glory and it is evident to the physical eye with no explanation.

Psalm 19:3-4
There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
Their line has gone out through all the earth,
And their utterances to the end of the world.

Psalm 19:7-9 and the rest of the chapter goes on to tell there is a more superior revelation which can be seen with spiritual eyes.

The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever

But this revelation is stupidly suppressed in the day in which we live.
As I share these examples, I aim to highlight:
1. how we need to be on guard against the godless thinking which seeks to infiltrate every aspect of our lives in 2024.
2. that it takes more faith to follow worldly thinking than it does to believe God.

But why do people make greater mental leaps to reject God than to believe God?

Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis says: “People need to understand that Darwin’s motivation was to come up with a way of explaining life by natural processes—without God. In other words, a way of getting rid of God. Naturalistic evolution is a religion—a way of thinking that denies the supernatural and promotes materialism. Sadly, many church leaders over the years have accepted Darwin’s ideas and compromised God’s Word in Genesis.”

Mental gymnastics are required to assent to notions such as lucky math, gender design in apes (but not humans), or the denial of life altogether on account of choice. Apart from being given spiritual eyes to see, none of us would submit to the authority of God. We are not inclined to obey God’s commands unless he unveils our eyes. The trouble in our day though is that the majority of the world is now taught to deny their Creator from their youth and it is keeping people perpetually lost.

There is natural revelation which may allow people to believe in God. But it must go further in–to a divine revelation which tells us that this world is marred by sin and so are we. Therefore we need a savior to rescue us. And that is why God sent his son Jesus. But to follow Him, we cannot suppress truth and live however we wish. We must repent from sin and believe in Him to be saved. And this gives great glory to God!

Love,
