We listen to a lot of music on our drives back and forth, here and there. Do you ever catch yourself mindlessly singing words to familiar songs and then actually realizing what you are singing? I am struck by how many popular Christian songs sing about trusting God. The words roll right off my lips, but my life stutters and halts in actually trusting God.
I see this as we worship in church too. We belt out “I surrender ALL” when we only mean to surrender maybe a little bit of our control, of our hearts, of our plans.
Someone asks for our forgiveness and our mouth says “yes”, but our actions say “no”.
I instruct my children to follow MY authority and expect that to happen. I agree that God has given authority over me also and that I need to respect them and follow. Yet, the complaining and better ideas in my mind prove where my heart lies.
Being a woman of the Word means to live these words that I read and love. May my eyes never gloss over commands that God has given. May my heart never excuse what is right for what my flesh desires instead. A tender heart desires to do the will of the Father and believes her Father (and His ways) is good.
Only through the power of the Holy Spirit will we be able to mean what we say. We must press on in this power to glorify the Lord.
And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Therefore, we are debtors–not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:10-14
