Oh, ladies. We are a dramatic bunch.
If we aren’t wearing our feelings on our sleeves, we are stifling those emotions down deep in our souls only to erupt later in a Mt. Vesuvius flow upon our family or friends. Social media has only served to broadcast our drama as we star in our own little reality shows each day, chronicling the latest big thing to happen: the rude comment made toward us and our children at the store, our child’s horrendous tantrum or other act of disobedience, hubby’s stupidity, or the HIPAA violations as we share intimate details of ours or others’ health updates.
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed it in your life, but I’ve observed two things in mine. When drama rises, I either shut down or crave more. We have a choice. My question for you today is this:
“Are you craving drama? ”
As a junkie to her drug, we, too, become addicted to the everyday drama in our homes, on the TV, in the world. The drug-abuser may hate the drug and love it all at the same time. We are no different. While we may despise that relative’s comments to us, we also thrive on how it makes us feel offended and bitter. We hash and re-hash the story out with anyone who will listen. In the end, we think we feel better. It’s a high as we ask others, “Can you believe?…You’ll never guess what she did this time…”
Where do you need to admit that you’re addicted to drama?
Are you a self-proclaimed worrier? Maybe you find yourself worrying about your children, your health, the world around us. You dwell on the what-if scenarios. Fear acts as a drug through your veins; you hate it and yet crave it all the more.
Are you a complainer? You never seem to find joy, but you can find all sorts of things that went wrong on the way to work, or the store, or even Bible study. Thankfulness gets choked out by the grumbly drug.
If we profess Jesus Christ, ladies, we must remember–and live–by the script that is His Word, the Bible, not by the reality TV show scripts that permeate our world. Sure, the construction is bad; yes, the world seems to be going crazy; no, I didn’t like how she responded to me in the check-out line…and yet, we have a choice if we want to take that drug of drama or respond as a new creation.
“Do everything without grumbling or arguing.”
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
“…therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
“…Behold, I make all things new…”
Jesus Christ remains the same through all of the drama that encircles us. Hang onto Him in the storm and you will not be shaken. Don’t be enticed by the drama that woos you to join it. Take your heart to the Lord, pour it out to Him, and let Him–the One who can do something about your worries, your fears, your hurts–carry that burden. What a gift we’ve been given. We don’t have to carry this load. We don’t have to imbibe the drama drug.
“I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.”
Love, Wendy
