Has anyone ever asked you why you believe in God? And have you ever said, “I just believe. I just know”?
When a friend told me of her resolute hope that God would answer her prayer in the affirmative I just looked at her in awe and asked her, “How do you know He’ll answer it in that way?” and her response was that she just believed it.
The reason she could believe with this kind of faith was because God’s word backed up her prayer request. She had His promise and she believed His promise to be true. Seem simple to you? It is. Just as God gave my friend faith at her conversion to believe in Him, God was also giving her faith to believe that He would honor His promises as she prayed about this daily need.
That conversation got me thinking. Do I believe without a doubt for the things I want? Do I believe without a doubt in the prayers I pray? I’m not talking about selfish prayers where I’m asking God for a big-screen TV or a yacht cruise, I’m talking about prayers and things that would actually be glorious and godly and show God off! Do I believe God’s promises in His word? Do I have a belief that is rooted in deep faith? How about you?
No faith is possible apart from the supernatural Spirit-work in our hearts. If you believe Jesus Christ was risen from the dead and you are saved, though, then the Holy Spirit abides in you and He gives you faith to believe. If we can believe Jesus would die a sacrificial death for us, atone for our sins, and give us His perfection…then, by all means, may we exercise faith to believe He will answer our prayer requests that are in His will!
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. 1 John 5:14-15
