Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
Hebrews 4: 14

We are a fickle people.  One moment we believe that God is easily accessible and Heaven is achievable, especially if we do enough good.  The next minute we think we can’t face the awe of the Living God so there must be someone, some human,  who can be the ‘middle man’ for us.   The book of Hebrews gives us the Truth, though.

Our God is a consuming fire and He will most certainly unleash His perfect justice upon our sin so we do indeed need a ‘middle man’, but it is not just any ordinary human being who can fulfill this job.  As I wrote a few days ago, Jesus is the only Way to God the Father, to eternal life with Him.  We cannot work hard enough or be good enough to appease a perfect and holy Creator.  Only a perfect blood sacrifice could do this.

The great High Priest became the very sacrifice that He was offering.

As Jesus laid down His life for His children, He bridged the awful gap between sin and holiness.  What makes this even more amazing is that this lavish demonstration of love was done while we were still sinners!  He wasn’t an ordinary middle man, but the only acceptable sacrifice to justify our sins.  He unifies us with God.

It’s awesome knowing that Jesus has taken care of this important work completely, but guess what?  That is not it!

For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Hebrews 4: 15

As if eternal life wasn’t enough, we have a High Priest who has lived through it all and has experienced life in this flesh.  Every single thing you struggle with, every tempting thing…Jesus gets it.  He understands.  He’s been there and done that and had victory over it all.   Nothing is beyond Him.  If you are struggling in sin and you can’t seem to get out of its grip, you don’t need to hide it from Jesus because you don’t think He’d understand or He’d be embarrassed by it.  His faithful work, both in life and in death, gives you comfort and strength to be transformed and released from the power of sin.

We can be open and honest with Jesus, our great High Priest who sits at the right hand of God our Father.  As the accuser hurls condemning attacks at us, our Advocate, Jesus, intercedes on our behalf.  The perfect sacrifice has been administered by the great High Priest and we can now…

therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4: 16
