It’s been really dry and hot lately.  I guess that’s what summer is sometimes. I was not all about mowing the lawn when it was in excess of 90 degrees outside.  Besides, the lack of rain crisped my lawn nicely anyway.  And it didn’t even bother me that everything was brown and crunchy.

Well, it almost didn’t bother me.  It did irritate me that I couldn’t manage to remember to water my flowers.  I love those flowers.  The sweat of my brow planted those flowers and watched them grow like little children.  My mind said I loved them, but my actions said I didn’t care THAT much because I still kept forgetting to give them a drink.  [I would like to insert the note that although I did compare my flowers to children, I wouldn’t actually forget to give a child a drink.  Please don’t avoid asking me to babysit based on this one comment.]

The temps dropped to only 88 degrees, and I knew this was my window of opportunity, so I mowed the grass.  In some spots it was hard to tell where my rows were because of all of the brown patches.  When I finished, I also weeded the front flower beds and once again told myself that I really needed to give these flowers some water – they were all looking sad and/or were too far gone.

Then something miraculous happened!  It rained.  It wasn’t even a long rain–it came, it saw, it conquered–but it helped this girl out because, yes, you guessed it–I had not watered my poor flowers.  It took that one rainshower to perk up my geraniums, in particular.  One rainshower and they shot out new buds.  It’s as if they were waiting on that one thing–refreshment.

Have you ever experienced that spiritually–a season where you’re dry and brown and crunchy, so to speak?

“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:10-11

Isaiah equates God’s Word with the rain coming down and producing fruit.  God’s Word is the refreshment to a parched soul, rehydration to the withered hope, health to a shriveling prayer life.

Let it rain!

Love, April
