I planted flowers at the front of my house last spring for the first time ever.  I don’t have a green thumb at all. Whatever the opposite of green is … that’s what color my thumb is.  But flowers make me happy. They have cheery little faces that greet me each morning and welcome me home at night.  So, I planted flowers. And I talked to them … and I may have written them a limerick or two along the way.

In this flower endeavor, I discovered that half of my front yard gets a lot of sun and the other half doesn’t.  Therefore, half of my flowers thrived and half struggled. Most of the more delicate flowers on the shady side didn’t survive even through the summer.

But I had a surprise this spring … one of the pansies on the shady side came back this year.  Apparently, this little purple pansy never learned that it was an annual and wasn’t supposed to re-bloom.  But it certainly did rebloom, and it’s growing like crazy.

Had you asked me if that little pansy would have survived the winter and come back to flourish, I would have with 100% certainty said it wasn’t possible.  There’s science and botany and there are rules to follow. But that little purple flower defied those rules. All through the winter, it was just waiting to break through the soil again. What my eyes knew to be true (that it was dead never to be seen again), didn’t turn out to be true after all.

How often do we live our lives walking by sight and not by faith?  Some days we feel stuck in whatever pattern or situation we’re currently in–giving up hope that God is still working even when we can’t see all He is doing.  God is patiently calling us to trust Him and come near to Him in our season of waiting.

But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Your works.  Psalm 73:28

God is faithful.  He is good. Have faith in His work even in our waiting.

Love, April
